A School Counselor is a professional counselor who works in a school setting. We help students with Social/Emotional, Behavioral, Cognitive, and Academic issues. This help might come in the form of Individual Counseling, Small Group Counseling, Classroom Guidance, Family Counseling, Parent-Teacher Conferences, or a referral to an outside source.
Individual Counseling- Students may be referred by a teacher, parent, or themselves to talk with me once, or multiple times during the school year. If I will be meeting with a student on a regular basis, I will inform his or her parents/guardians to let them know. Please fill out a referral form when possible; these are in paper form at the school, or online under the tab 'Important Forms' on this website.
I am bound by confidentiality with these exceptions:
If parents/guardians wish to know what your student and I are discussing, I would encourage you to talk to your student about it. I can give a brief summary, but I would prefer that your student tells you in their own words. Also, if you need help discussing a situation with your student, I would be more than happy to have a family counseling session with you.
Small Groups- I am planning to have several small groups during the remainder of the school year. Each group will consist of 5-6 students, and last for around 5 weeks. Some possible topics are: Anger Management, Study Skills, Divorce Support, Stress Management, Test Anxiety, Grief and Loss, Personal Power/Self Esteem, and Relationships.
*We can also work on any of these topics (and more) during individual counseling if someone would feel uncomfortable working in a group.
Classroom Guidance-
These are the topics I will cover during the remainder of the year:
February: Kindness and Friendship
March: Career and Self-Exploration (Personality, Interests, Abilities)
April: Goal-Setting, Responsibility, and Positive Attitude
May: Thankfulness and Empathy
June: Citizenship and Making a Difference
*I will cover additional topics in my Newsletters and on this webpage.
